Although it has been more than 20 years since the September 11th terrorist attacks, the adverse health effects linked to the toxins in the NYC Exposure Zone continue to be felt by responders and survivors. Unfortunately, thousands in lower Manhattan in the days and weeks following 9/11 have developed various forms of cancer, aerodigestive disorders, respiratory illnesses, and musculoskeletal issues.

While the WTC Health Program works with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund to certify 9/11-related health conditions, it also provides medical monitoring and treatment to eligible responders and survivors. It’s crucial to attend regular health screenings to catch a 9/11-related health condition while it is in the early stages. Significantly, the Program has clinics throughout the New York Metro area and a Nationwide Provider Network for those who live outside the region.

WTC Health Program Screening is Available at No Cost to Eligible Responders and Survivors

WTC Health Program medical screenings are available at no cost to responders and survivors who meet the eligibility criteria. The Program covers the costs associated with initial health evaluations and annual monitoring exams. Additionally, there are no premiums, fees, co-pays, or out-of-pocket costs if treatment is necessary for a WTC Health Program-certified condition.

Some 9/11-Related Illnesses Do Not Appear Until Years Later

You shouldn’t wait until you think you might be sick to seek a medical evaluation from the WTC. Many types of 9/11 illnesses and cancers may not appear for years or even decades. Some types of cancer and other health conditions may not become apparent until they are in the later stages and become more difficult to treat. However, with regular medical monitoring and screening, a doctor can detect an illness early on and take proactive treatment measures.

Many 9/11 Cancers Have Long Latency Periods

While two decades might have passed since September 11, 2001, many forms of cancer linked to the toxic dust cloud have long latency periods. For instance, solid cancers typically develop four years or more after exposure. Thyroid cancer can appear 2.5 years or later, and mesothelioma can take 11 years to develop. Medical monitoring for 9/11-related cancer is crucial since many types of cancer can be treated effectively if diagnosed in the early stages.

The WTC Health Program Covers Medically Associated Conditions

In addition to covering certified medical conditions directly linked to the terrorist attacks, the WTC Health Program also covers medically associated conditions. This means that the Program will pay for medical screening, monitoring, and treatment for health conditions resulting from a certified condition — or the progression of one.

The WTC Health Program Certifies Eligible Conditions for VCF Compensation

To obtain compensation from the VCF for a 9/11-related health condition, it is necessary first to have it certified by the WTC Health Program. While the two entities are separate, they work together to ensure responders and survivors receive the monetary award to which they’re entitled. The Program certifies a wide range of physical conditions related to 9/11, including all forms of cancer, lung disease, asthma, musculoskeletal disorders, COPD, chronic sinusitis, respiratory illnesses, and many others.
