Due to exposure to the carcinogens in the toxic dust cloud in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks, countless responders and survivors have been diagnosed with various forms of cancer, including stomach cancer. This condition can impact any part of the stomach and spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. If you are an eligible 9/11 responder or survivor who developed stomach cancer — or if you lost a loved one to this condition — you may be entitled to receive a monetary award from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.

What is 9/11 Stomach Cancer?

Stomach cancer, also referred to as gastric cancer, can begin in any part of the stomach. It causes the cells in the stomach's inner lining to develop changes in their DNA and multiply quickly. The form of stomach cancer diagnosed is based on the type of cell in which the cancer began. Examples of the types of stomach cancer in 9/11 responders and survivors can include adenocarcinoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, carcinoid tumors, and lymphoma.

Symptoms of 9/11 stomach cancer can include the following:

    • Pain in the belly
    • Difficulty swallowing
    • Feeling bloated after eating
    • Feeling full after consuming small amounts of food
    • Decreased appetite
    • Fatigue
    • Unintended loss of weight
    • Nausea
    • Heartburn
    • Indigestion
    • Vomiting
    • Black stool

Since it does not always cause symptoms in the early stages, stomach cancer is often difficult to detect until it has become more advanced. However, as the disease progresses, symptoms can worsen — and it may become harder to eat or drink. This type of cancer can also metastasize and spread to different parts of the body. Treatment for stomach cancer is provided to eligible 9/11 responders and survivors through the WTC Health Program and can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted drug therapy, and immunotherapy. Treatment is typically successful when this form of cancer is found only in the stomach.

VCF Compensation for 9/11 Stomach Cancer

Those who were in the NYC Exposure Zone in the weeks and months following the September 11th terrorist attacks are at an increased risk of developing many forms of cancer, including stomach cancer. The VCF understands the physical and emotional toll of 9/11 cancer on responders, survivors, and their families. Those who satisfy the eligibility criteria may be entitled to receive monetary compensation for the economic and non-economic losses they suffered due to their stomach cancer diagnosis.

A VCF award for economic loss in connection with stomach cancer can include compensation for loss of earnings, employment benefits, replacement services loss, and out-of-pocket medical expenses incurred. Economic loss — also referred to as “pain and suffering” — is meant to compensate a victim for the physical pain and emotional anguish they suffered as a result of their cancer diagnosis. Under the Zadroga Act, a responder or survivor may be able to receive a non-economic loss award of up to $250,000 for a cancer condition, based on its severity. In limited cases where a victim has been diagnosed with multiple forms of cancer, the Special Master may issue an award above this statutory cap.

In cases where a responder or survivor passed away due to their 9/11 cancer condition, $250,000 may be recovered by the family on behalf of the victim by filing a deceased claim. The spouse and dependents of the responder or survivor may also be entitled to $100,000 each for the loss of their loved one.
