New York City officials recently announced that three more people killed on September 11th have been identified through advanced DNA analysis. See the City’s announcement and national coverage from ABC News and People. As officials emphasized, the work to identify victims continues even now, nearly a quarter-century later.

The Science Continues Search for Answers

The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner continues to apply enhanced DNA techniques, including new extraction and matching methods, to remains that were recovered in 2001 and 2002. Officials note that about 1,100 victims remain unidentified, and that the effort will continue as technology advances.

Health Effects Lasted Long After the Dust Settled

For thousands of people, exposure to the dust and debris in Lower Manhattan didn’t end on 9/11. Federal programs recognize exposures stretching for many months after the attacks. The World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program provides no-cost monitoring and treatment for eligible responders and survivors with certified 9/11-related conditions such as asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis, GERD, certain cancers, and mental-health conditions.

Key points to know:

  • Congress permanently reauthorized and fully funded the VCF. The claim-filing deadline for everyone is October 1, 2090.
  • In most cases, you should obtain WTC Health Program certification before submitting a VCF claim and the attorneys and staff at The Dearie Law Firm have helped thousands of people navigate this.
  • Proof of presence matters. We can help establish this proof of presence.

If You Were There, You May Be Owed Compensation

The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) provides financial compensation to people who were present at the World Trade Center site or within the surrounding NYC Exposure Zone between September 11, 2001 and May 30, 2002, and who have a certified 9/11-related physical condition. The Exposure Zone generally means Manhattan south of Canal Street/East Broadway/Clinton Street, as well as areas along debris-removal routes.
